This form of therapy began thousands of years ago in China. Traditional Chinese Medicine believes that energy (qi) flows along channels or meridians under the skin. When there is an imbalance in the qi, dysfunction occurs and changes the person's ability to heal. By applying pressure or needles to an acupuncture point, you can stimulate a change in the energy to that area of the body. Acupuncture stimulates the body's ability to heal itself by increasing energy to the affected area. Acupuncture can treat a variety of conditions including shoulder pain, back pain and headaches.
Acupuncture works by placing very thin needles (about the width of a hair) just under the skin to stimulate an acupuncture point. The needles are left in the skin for approximately 15 to 20 minutes. The needles are disposable and new needles are used with treatment. The frequency of care depends on the severity of the condition being treated. On average, a patient will have two treatments a week for two to four weeks.
